A New Yarn, A New Contest
I have a bin of new yarn-
So I thought I'd have a new contest! This one will be a little easier than the Summer Goals Contest... Just leave a comment on this post letting me know at what age you learned to knit! Sometime on July 16th, I'll select a number (using a random number generator) and if that number was the number of your comment, you win! If you leave the name of the person (or blog) that you heard about this contest through, that person may win a little something too! (If you came here all on your own, just throw in the name of a blogging friend...) Post about the contest on your blog and you'll increase your chances of at least coming in runner-up! (More people will list you as their referrer.)
The lucky winner will receive one hank of Blue Sky Alpacas' oh-so-soft-and-scrumptious new yarn - Suri Merino, just introduced earlier this month at the latest TNNA Trade Show, in either Harvest or Earth. This lovely new yarn is 60% baby suri and 40% merino in a soft single ply that knits up to a suggested gauge of 5-6 sts per inch on US size 5-7 ndls. I am currently swatching on some different needle sizes to play with it and see what the differing fabric results will be... I'll keep you posted about that as time allows...
I'm also working up a quick and easy cabled hat pattern that you can make with just one skein, so you'll have something to do with your yarn - we don't want to see this lovely new yarn just sitting in a stash somewhere...
So far, 2 new patterns have been released using the Suri Merino- the High Neck Cable sweater-

and the Hat & Wristlets set- (which also uses Blue Sky Worsted Hand Dyes)
I haven't knit a sample of either of these yet, but I have had them in my hands to work on the technical editing- they are cute pieces and this yarn just feels good knit up. It really is so soft! (gotta love that suri alpaca!)
So there ya go- new yarn, new patterns to try, a new contest to enter, and it's not even your birthday! Unless it is, in that case, well, happy birthday!
Happy knitting-
ali
ps- I think it was either 4 or 5 summers ago that I learned to knit, I truly can't remember for sure, and since I didn't write it down... well, I know it was in this house, so it can't be more than 6 years... we'll go with 5, which would have made me 28 years old when I held my first knitting needles... though I had crocheted on and off since a young girl.

I learned to knit when I was 12. I was in junior high and it was a fiber project for art class. I even remember knit with 2 strand of Red Heart yellow and blue for a fun tweedy look. I don't think I made anything out of it but I was on the road.
Hmm.....what age did I learn to knit? I learned in Brownies when I was 8, but sorta dropped it till I was 19 and in nursing school. Then I became totally addicted!! That's almost (eek) 20 years ago now!!
I first learned to knit when I was five and I wanted to be just like mommy. I completed about 6" square of garter stitch in a light blue chunky wool and then forgot about knitting for many years after that. I picked it up again in December of 2001 while I was visiting my aunt during Christmas vacation and about to go study in London without any of my friends...
Ooh here she is with another enticing contest!! I learned to knit very late in the game--age 35!!
Hi, I think I learned to knit when I was 9 or 10. I know it was before 6th grade though. It was semi-self taught and also a bit by a friend of our family. I knit here and there through the years but became totally addicted about 4 years ago! I read about this contest on The ADD Knitter's blog:)
I was 9 - I learned at a Community Ed class - I was the youngest person there.
I found the post all on my own!
I learned some from my grandma as a little girl. But then as an adult, I told my mom that I wanted to learn. So for Christmas of '99, she got me one of those book sets "I Taught Myself Knitting" or something like that. So at age 22 I learned how to knit.

I didn't learn about this from anyone. So I would like to put my friend Lori's name in the drawing.
Her website is
http://lorislightextemporanea.blogspot.com/
I learned knit stitch originally when I was about 7 years old from a nanny. But didn't pick it up again until I was 24. I know I won the last contest (!) but I thought I'd share my knitting experience!
I learned to knit from my grandma when I was about 11. She was visiting on furlough for about 3 weeks with us. It was summer vacation, it was hot and I was bored to death!! I didn't keep it up, and came back to it about 5 years ago when I was 34.
I learned to knit when I was 28 also! I learned at a community ed class.
I read about the contest directly on your blog, but I originally found your blog from Amanda at Clothesknit.
I learned to knit when I was 15, which was about 6 months ago! It was during the holiday season and I wanted to learn how anyone could deal with TWO needles, but now I know and it sortaa consumed me! I love it! I used acrylic for about 2 weeks then boughtg some cascade 220 and have since dropped the acrylic altogether! I came on my own and my blogging buddy is Lynne @ www.iwasknittogetherinmymotherswomb.typepad.com, Love the yarn!
The yarn looks scrumptious! Great colors, too. I was 28 when I learned to knit. Haven't stopped since!
I learned to knit when I was 30. Several of my fellow students in my yoga teacher training course were knitting away during the breaks, and I became intrigued. By time the proram was over, we were all knitting on garter stitch scarves during the lectures. Our teacher didn't mind; she's the one that taught most of us.
I was around 12 and my parents taught me. I had just finished learning crochet and wanted to branch out.
I didn't proceed much and only picked it up last year, 10 years later. =D
I was about 7 when I was taught at school, I used to knit for my dolls. Late teens I started knitting for myself. There was a 7 year hiatus and I started again when I was 50, and love the extra dimension the internet gives.
Found it on my own!
I learnt to knit properly when I was 6 or 7. The first thing I remember knitting was a dolls skirt. I found this blog on my own :)
Does it count if I don't remember? I was a child I, I just don't remember not knowing how to knit. I knit quite a bit in college, then to a hiatus of many years and started up seriously again about 5 years ago.
I learned to knit when I was 25 from a Holocaust survivor who re-knit sweaters to sell on the black market. Then I learned again at about 40 because it didn't stick so much the first time.
A.D.D. Knitter sent me here.
That high neck pattern looks yummy.
I learned to knit 7 years ago after seeing a women knitting at an airshow. Since I didn't know anyone who knita and at the time there wasn't a lys I bought a book and taught myself.
Hi!
Made my way over from the A.D.D. Knitter......I learned to knit while in college....I mush have been 19 years old....Have been going strong ever since!:)
I first learned to knit my first year of college, so I must have been 18. Twenty years ago. Gulp.
I came here from the comment you left on my blog! :)
I learned to knit when I was three! My gramma taught all of our generation to knit fairly early, though I admit I didn't accomplish anything really exciting (beyond the scope of squiggly sided scarves, pot holders and makeshift doll stuff) until I'd started junior high -- then I knit a sweater, ran out of yarn, and began my inability to follow a pattern as written all at once.
Credit for pointing me in this direction goes to Jean at so please enter her for spreading the word as well {waves to Jean}...
I learned when I was 8, and that summer, I knit and knit and knit.....then got bored with it. That Christmas I started up again, but just scarves.....eventually, I accepted patterns, and now here I am!
I was 14 when I learned the basics but after 1 scarf never went back to it for about 20 years. It still didn't take over my life until I learned to knit socks 2 1/2 years ago at the age of 56. That's my story & I'm sticking to it. ;-)
I came over from Add-knitter, and I was 24 when I taught myself to knit- 21years ago YIKES! So how come I'm not any better after all these years?????
i learned to knit this past january, at age 27. and today is my birthday, so thanks for the contest! :)
I first learned to knit when I was 5. My aunt taught me because I was infatuated with the mittens she used to make. Only learned the knit stitch and didn't understand that it took a purl stitch to make it look like "real knitting". That's 26 years ago! Yikes!
I was 34 years old when I finally learned to knit. It had been on my to do list for eons. I learned at the LYS, or what used to be the LYS when I lived in Mpls. I come from a long line of crocheters, which I'm just now sort of learning.
I learned to knit when I was 18. My mom taught me right before she drove me from CA to PA for college. I didn't see too much of the scenery... I was too busy making a sweater.
The A.D.D. Knitter sent me here :)
Hmm, I think I was 12. My mom decided my brother and I were going to learn, picked out our yarn and the pattern. The yarn was this hideous bright acrylic with silver strands running through it. Mine was hot pink, my brother's royal blue. He finished his slippers; I did not. I learned to crochet and granny-squared my way through junior high. I finally picked up knitting again at age 35. So you get both ages. :D
I have you bookmarked! So I will "refer" my friend Caitlin (www.crescentknitter.blogspot.com) instead.
Sadly I did not learn to knit until I was 36 (I'm now 38) and I took a couple of classes at the LYS. I am so jealous of those people who have been knitting since they were kids!
I learned to knit almost four years ago, my freshmen year of college. I knew how to crochet, and decided to join a knitting and crochet club at my college. They taught me to knit and I haven't been able to put the needles down since!
I also learned to crochet very young, but didn't learn to knit until age 31.
I learned to knit just about 6 years ago when I was 17. Now I'm a knitting freak! My ex sister in law showed me how and now she left and I guess I'm the resident knitter in the family :)
I read about this contest on Heather's blog
http://tinkymcfrog.blogspot.com/
and I'll be putting a link to it at my blog, www.crescentknitter.blogspot.com
The first time I learned to knit, I think I was 8 or 9, Grandma taught me. Picked it up again 3 years ago.
I found your blog through Kaity at http://kaityvr.wordpress.com/
I have crocheted since I was little but I learned to knit from my hubby'd grandma when we moved to FL 2 yrs ago. I was 20 yrs old. I am so glad I learned!
My grandma taught me how to knit when I spent the summer with her when I was 9. I have always kinda knit, but I really got back into it about two years ago...
I am not sure where I found you but maybe it was from Leslie at a-friend-to-knit-with dot blogspot...
I vaguely remember my mom showing me the knit stitch when I was maybe 6 or so, but I actually learned to knit when I was 32 or 33 (I'm 40 now).
I learned to knit very young. I must have been 7 or 8 and I remember exactly what is was that we had to knit: an oven cloth. With extreme fine needles for a child, US 0 or 2 mm and light blue cotton we had to do 4 rows 4 k and 4 p, 4 rows 4 p and 4 k etc.
I found your web via Guinifer
I learned to knit when I was 21, and haven't looked back sense. I saw this post on the blog Halfway Down the Stairs.
I learned to knit when I was about 10 but the project was an afgan and I got frustrated with it and put it away until sometime after my first child was born. I was in my mid 20's then. I finished it but didn't pick up my needles again until that same child turned 13 and on her birthday I got her a book with some simple projects and needles. I thought hey I can do this and proceded to knit hats and scarves for everyone(my then five children, Mom and step dad, Dad and Step mom, Mom and Dad in-law, my sister and her husband) I did all those from Oct to Nov that year and had them all mailed out and under everyones tree for Chritsmas. Then a friend told me about socks and I found a pattern online and made socks for my children and some little booties for my new little one. Now I am working on a sweater while DD1 is knitting purses, eye glass holders, head bands and cell phone socks for her friends. I have been coming to your site ever sense your last contest which I found out about from midwifemom from homeschoolblogger so she is the one who gets the credit. now I need to go post on my page and nurse my son. Laura
I learned to knit as a very little girl, but only made stockinette squares that rolled up and frustrated me. I really learned to knit when I was 15. I made legwarmers for ballet.
I only started knitting last year (august I think). That'd make me 29. And I taught myself with books, mainly, and some online help! What inspired me to learn? Craftylilly (aka Jennifer). I had her as a partner in a swap at Swap-bot and checked out her blog. Nobody in my family knits or crochets regularly (apparently one grandmother knows how to knit but I've never seen her do it!).
What fun! I learned to knit when I was about 10 years old; I taught myself from pictures in a craft magazine. And I've kept steadily at it for all of these years (and we're talking decades here, folks).
I found out about the contest simply from reading your blog, but I originally found your blog via Tammy at http://tammyknits.blogspot.com/
I learned when I was about 10 from my mother, an amazing knitter, but I didn't start knitting seriously until about 7 years ago. In the intervening.. decades.. I crocheted. Now I'm knitting knitting knitting - and just made my first socks!
I heard about the contest from Caitlin, the Crescent Knitter (another amazing knitter, and friend).
Librarian Knits blog led me to this contest, so of course I had to giveher the plug. I learned how to knit in the summer of 1997, so ten years ago. I am 45 now, so I was 35 when I learned to knit.
I think I was 9... possibly even younger but that's the first time I remember working on a project. I think my first project was mittens... I remember that they weren't very warm though!
Also, I got here through the ADD Knitter.
I started knitting when I was 25- I bought a kit at the drugstore on a whim.
I learned to knit in 2000 when I was 31.I figured new millenium, time to learn something new.So I got Melanie Fallicks Teach Kids to Knit book and I have been obsessed since.
I found this on The ADD Knitters blog. theaddknitter.blogspot.com
I learned (for real) when I was 22. As a child I started a garter stitch scarf, but that doesn't count.
I came over from
http://librarianknits.blogspot.com/2007/06/catching-up.html
I learned to knit when I was in Brownies -- aboput 8 years old--- for a knitting badge (I loved it, took a book out of the library and renewed the loan every week for a year while I knit a doll), after the doll was done, I forgot all about knitting.
I took up the needles again when I was 34, wanting to make a gift for a new niece -- couldn't remember a thing! Bought Susan Bates Learn to knit booklet and I have been going great guns since
(I don't usually count the childhood knitting whwn asked when i learned to knit -- didn't retain a thing! and only knew how to do the knit stitch, no pul, no casting on, no casting off!)
I read your blog often, so wasn't linked here from anyone (but I will link to you on my blog!)
I was 22 when I taught myself how to knit. My second son was a baby at the time.
I learned to knit when I was about 14 my mom taught me and I wasn't that excited about it until I learned how to knit miiitens and then I took off and I LOVE to knit now its just finding the time to do it.
it was three years ago march ...so i was 28.
My great-grandmother first taught me to knit when I was about 10. I didn't do anything with it - I think she taught me because I was bored.
Then when I was 20 I got the bug and decided to learn it again.
I had gotten a book from the library and went to a LYS. The kindly lady who owned the shop at that time selected a pair of size 8 straights (the only straights I have ever purchased) and some inexpensive (=scratchy) green wool. I knit my dh a scaft that he still uses today even though it is ratty and the garter stitched stretched out ridiculously. (He is 6' and the scarf will go around his neck twice and both ends will stick out from below the edge of a jacket that hits at mid thigh - the closest guess is that it is about 8 feet long).
I found you myself, so I will refer my fried Stacy (http://clickityclick2.blogspot.com/)
I will be posting a link on my site as well.
Stop over and enter the contest I am currently running:
http://houseofwool.blogspot.com/2007/06/what-would-you-call-it.html
I'm guestimating that I was about 10 when I learned to knit. I had sharpened two sticks from a basket and was trying to learn that way. My friend from across the street had yarn and only one set of needles. My mother's mother was there, and I guess I made her feel so bad that a couple of days later she had a package in the mail for me consisting of a set of needles (which I still have, hard shape at the tips and never used any more but will always keep, about a 4mm) and some bright pink and purple acrylic yarn.
I heard about your conest from Heddy at ewegottaknit.blogspot.com.
I just learned to knit one year ago, at the ripe old age of 41! I had no teachers, just a couple books and the wonderful knittinghelp dot com. Thanks for the contest, and I love your designs!
I learned to knit about three years ago which made me 26 years old. I have been crocheting for nearly 10 years.

I learnt to knit while in school at about age 7, more years ago than I want to say. I have always liked it and when about 10 I was knitting children's sweaters, hats, mittens as gifts for poorer people and to be sold at charity sales. I knit clothes for myself, my DH and for my 3 now grown children and for lots of others too.It brings me pleasure and relaxation. I came to your link while browsing :
celticmemoryyarns.blogspot.com
This took a bit of thinking! It was in Australia. I recently had my first born who received handknitted sweaters from the ex-stepmother-in-law. So, it must have been 1986.
I learned when I was 19, but I didn't start knitting full speed ahead until last October.
Also, www.librarianknits.blogspot.com sent me here!
I was introduced to knitting at age 7 ("Cathy, this is knitting; knitting, this is Cathy!) but really just knit an indescribable scarf on my knitting loom, so I'd have to say I really LEARNED to knit at age 18 -- went off to college and then started to knit, when I was no longer libing with the resident knitter and crocheter, my mother! She gave me Knitting Without Tears within a year of my learning to knit and it changed my life....
My age 7 scarf, made on the Knitting Jenny loom of leftover acrylic yarns from various family stashes, including one memorable section of Day-Glo orange bulky yarn, is still worn by my father 36 years later. That's so sweet! It's so hideous!
PS I read about this contest at Stumbling Over Chaos.
i learned to knit when i was 6.
i can still remember the yellow acrylic yarn and the green plastic knitting needles.
my Irish grandmother was visiting and my mom and sister were there too.
i didn't knit from about age 12-25 but then when my nephew was born i started up again...now i'm addicted!!
Mmmm...Blue Sky Alpaca...
I was 30 and stuck with a stress fracture and bored out of my mind and my mom taught me to knit and I haven't stopped since ;)
What a fun contest. I was sent here by Chris (stumblingoverchaos.com).
My friend's grandmother taught me to knit when I was 12, but I really didn't like how slow I thought it was. My grandmother had taught me to crochet at 10 and I was pretty fast with that; being a kid, I need instant gratification, so I only knit for a short while and picked it up again as an adult.
p.s. today isn't my birthday, but it is my blogiversary :)
Hi! Thanks for the contest :))))
I was 46 when I learned, and I am very sorry I waited so long too! LOVE it!
I got here from a post on this blog ;) http://limedragon.com/2007/05/17/hat-of-gold/ just in case I get lucky!
I heard about your contest from Chris (of Chaos & Mayhem fame). I believe I was 13 when I learned to knit in "crap acrylic" in YELLOWS and ORANGES - a ripple afghan. Too funny, I'm using acrylic now to make a blue/bone/white ripple afghan!
(((hugs)))
I'm here from Stumbling Over Chaos. I learned to knit when I was about 6 or 7. And that was a long, long time ago. My grandma taught me and the first thing I made was a nasty looking scarf.
I learned to knit last December, in a drive-by lesson from my grandmother, who was on her way to a bridge game! I was (and am) 25.
And I found out about this from Julie: http://noolieknits.typepad.com/noolieknits/.
~Ann
Ooh, what lovely yarn! I was 26 when I learned.
Stumbling over Chaos sent me...
I learned (self-taught) to knit when I was 37. I am 40 now. I am totally addiceted!
I learned to knit when I was 37, after crocheting for 30 years. I learned about this contest from Chris at Stumbling Over Chaos.
Janet H.
love the hat & wristlets pattern! i was 25 or 26. =]
i learned to knit when i was 18. I had just gone off to college and There were professor auctions where professors would donate their time, cooking, etc. and the money would go to a charity near the college. A professor was offering knitting lessons and knitting was something that i felt i should know how to do, having crocheted since i was 5. Even then i walked around campus with a ball of yarn in my pocket and needled is my hand, no matter what.
That's really a two-answer question--technically, I learned to KNIT when I was about 7, from our next-door neighbor who taught me to knit. Not purl. Not cast-on. Not increasing or decreasing or anything else. Just . . . knit. I eventually bought a book that enabled me to figure out how to cast on and thus followed a lot of boring garter stitch rectangles....
I consider, therefore, that I REALLY learned to knit in college, when I was 21. That's when I bought Maggie Righetti's "Knitting in Plain English," devoured the entire thing, and then knitted my very first sweater--a lopi, stranded, pullover sweater, using both hands for the color work, and on circulary needles--all in ten days.
Hmmm..first learned at about age 8. I made a belt...and well, then put the needles away...far far away...and picked them up again last year (at 31) with my cousin's influence. :)
Oh yeah...learned about your contest at...My House of Wool.
I was 20. I taught myself late one night in my college dorm room.
Julie of Noolie Knits and Chris of Stumbling over Chaos both sent me. I learned to knit when I was 24 (that was 33 years ago) and I havent' stopped knitting all these years.
I learned to knit at age 7 in Brownies. Learned to knit. Made a square, didn't pick it up again until I was 31....
I learned to knit when I was 45 years old (better late than never!), though I didn't have much time to devote until the past year or so.
Now I sometimes wish I would have learned earlier in life....all of the projects I would have had time for!
I learned in June 2004, I was 33. Taught by my friend who is a midwife. Been obsessed ever since!
My sister taught me to knit when I was twelve. Her sewing class was branching out into knitting, crochet and embroidery, so she passed the basics along to me and promptly forgot all about them. She went back to her first love, sewing, and I happily embarked on my new one!
Thank you for the contest - most kind. ;D
I taught myself to knit when I was 23. I had been crocheting since I was about 7 but didn't really like it. I had some yarn laying around and I found some chop sticks (they are still my fav 'sticks' to work with). I sat at the computer and googled knitting and knittinghelp.com popped up and it was over. I have been knitting ever since. I was sent here by http://houseofwool.blogspot.com
I was 7 years old when I learned to knit, I'm 53 now...
Julie at Noolieknits sent me...it's her blogiversary...
I'm here via ADD knitter. I learned to knit when I was 13. My mother taught me because her mother was a brilliant knitter, and had passed away before finishing one last blanket. I still have the unfinished garment, which has always been an inspiration to me.
I was 7 or 8 years old when Mom taught me to knit. (Golly that's 39 or 40 years ago)
I learned to knit when I was 28 (5 years ago) through a community ed. knitting class. I learned about your contest through Chris over at Stumbling Over Chaos. That Blue Sky Suri Alpaca looks lovely! What a great contest. :)
My residence was collecting knitted squares for blankets to donate, and I learned then. I guess it was late 2002, making me 18.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I got here via Stumbling Over Chaos.
I don't remember not being able to knit, I am going to guess 5 or 6. I know my mom taught me to knit, but I don't remember her actually teaching me. i just remember being able to. My sister sent me a link to your blog.
I learned to knit at age 37 and it's the best thing (well the second best thing, my daughter was the best!) I ever did
My blogless friend Maddy taught me a lot of what I know today and am forever grateful! :-)
I learned when I was 27. My mom showed me some basics and then I took a class and was hooked from there!
I was 7 - my Grammie taught me when she was visiting - I knit a swatch! But I became a Knitter shortly after I was married. Something to do with having an sufficient income to build a stash!
I taught myself my first semester at Purdue. I was 18 and wanted something to carry with me to do between classes.
And Julie of Noolie Knits sent me here. :)
I learned to knit when I was 14. My mom tried to teach me earlier than that, but I just couldn't get it. I got so frustrated with it at first that I actually threw my needles out! A year later she re-taught me and now I knit more than anyone in my family. Now I'm the one fixing my mom's mistakes!
I read about this contest on Stumbling Over Chaos' blog.
I learned how to knit when I was 18. My grandma used to make me the most beautiful sweaters growing up and I would always ask her to teach me how to knit when she would visit. She told me she didn't have the patients to teach me because I didn't sit still. When she found out she had cancer I went and spent the summer with her. During that summer, she taught me how to knit. I think it's one of the best things she could have given me; now when I knit I feel connected to her.
I was taught to knit several times by my Grandma when I was a child, but it never stuck and I don't think i got beyond the second row of knitting. I picked it up again 4 years ago, after my first son was born. I wanted knit soakers, but didn't want to pay a lot of money for them. I remember not buying many supplies because I didn't know if it was something I would keep doing. Little did I know that I would become a bit obsessed. I was 24. I saw a note about your contest at Stumbling over Chaos.
It was just after my son was born. Let's see. I was almost 32 and I very unsuccessfully tried to learn from the book, "I can't believe I'm knitting!" or something to that effect. I eventually learned from a mom whose daughters I taught piano to and my MIL. I found this contest through www.stumblingoverchaos.com.
I was 27, and learned to help overcome the Baby Blues...
I heard about the contest from Julie at Noolie Knits! :0)
Golly, I learned to knit at a relatively old age - 28. I taught myself, with a little help from Martha Stewart. :)
My late grandmother taught me to knit when I was a mere lass of ten. Finer points were picked up over the years from a variety of places. Miss Chris at Stumbling Over Chaos was the nexus between your contest and me. Cheers.
I'm always a bit intimidated by all the people who learned to knit when they were 3 and have been churning out sweaters ever since. So it's nice to see that not everyone has a bazillion-year history of knitting here.
I learned to knit only a couple years ago, when I was 30. I learned to crochet maybe a couple years before that. I was so enthralled with knitting that I knit an entire variegated skein of acrylic into a big stockinette rectangle, just for something to knit, ha.
I came here via http://houseofwool.blogspot.com/
I first learned a bit from my grandma when I was 6 or 7 (I think), and I learned again last winter when I was 20.
I found this through Stumbling Over Chaos.
I learned to knit when I was 16, on Christmas break from college. I was curious about it because my roommate was a knitter, and in a fit of boredom (ha!) I asked my mom to teach me.
I learned to knit when I was 22. I've been knitting ever since...
Oh, at Noolie sent me (Julie)
I was 5 years old and learnt with my Nan
